Kei (pronounced Ka-A), is Japanese is Lucky. Kei is another unfortunate victim of commercial breeding. He is a gentle, teddy bear of a dog. When petted he grunted and moans to show his gratefulness. Due to his previous life, he is the tip of his left ear, part of his tongue and has scars on his snout. But these flaws seem to add to his adorableness. Kei is bothered by loud noises such as power tools. If he doesn't hide, he will bark until adequately consoled. He also suffers from nightmares. Sometimes he wakes in the middle of the night and barks. I have to go and hold him until he realizes he is safe. He has all his shots, and has been spayed and microchipped.

The dogs in the foster home absolutely love Kei. They have taught him to run and play. He doesn't quite understand toys. And will take treats with some patient coaxing. Cats intimate him. I have seen no evidence of predatory instinct or aggression. He loves to cuddle and is very generous with kisses.

He has had free roam of his foster house. He has not chewed on anything. He is a very laid back couch potato of a dog. He loves to lay on the bed and watch tv. He does have his own kennel and shares a room with Yuuko. And he chooses to spend most of his time in their room. He does well on a leash. Sometimes he is stubborn and will just refuse to be lead. Going up stairs make him nervous, so sometimes he has to be coaxed or picked up. I have seen no evidence of digging or climbing when outside in the yard.

Kei rides well in the car. And is very friendly in a variety of situations with a variety of people.

The vet saw no signs of derformities or genetic problems. His fur his healthy and thick. And he has put on weight while in foster care.

Kei is mostly housebroken. I have seen very few accidents. He has signals to let you know when he wants something. One of them is he will come up to you and politely paw at you with soulful eyes when he wants to be petted. He is vocal, but you have to listen or be near to him to hear the conversation.

Kei is part of a breeding pair. His mate is Yuuko. I would highly recommend they be adopted together. I fear that Kei will become seriously depressed and self mutilate if seperated from Yuuko.

I think he would also be very susceptible to separation anxiety from his human too. More so than Yuuko. When seperated they actively seek the other. And even though they both have their own kennels they choose to sleep together.

Kei would be happiest in a home that is calm and quiet. He does quite well with agressive and passive dogs and cats. I would not recommend Kei to a home with small children because of his nervousness.

Kei has been an absolute loving and kind addition to our foster household. He has so much love to give to the right family. He has had a rough life, but he is forgiving and gently. He just needs the same in return from his furever family.

The adoption fee for Kei is $200  Please refer to the MSIR website for more information on the application and adoption process.

NOTE: DUE TO THE BREED'S INDEPENDENT NATURE, SHIBAS SHOULD ALWAYS BE LEASHED WHENEVER THEY ARE OUTSIDE OF A SECURELY FENCED AREA. IN ADDITION, MANY SHIBAS ARE DOOR BOLTERS AND CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN AROUND DOORS AND OTHER ESCAPE POINTS.
  • Upon completion of each positive motivation-based obedience class, MSIR will rebate the new adopters $25.
  • And, upon earning a Good Canine Citizen certificate, MSIR will rebate another $25!

Any one interested in adopting null must first complete an adoption application and indicate, in the comments section, their interest in null.
