Is a Shiba Right for you?

Shibas are NOT for everyone. Please read and think about the following information carefully.  

Shibas CANNOT be reliably trusted off leash!

If you are looking for a dog you can walk off-leash, who is always looking for attention and affection, will always come when called, and will immediately love all new dogs they meet, then a shiba is probably NOT the right dog for you. 

Shibas are very independent and are often characterized as cat like.

Many shibas will not get along with other dogs (or cats) unless they get to be the boss. Many shibas can lively happily with other dogs (and cats) but some cannot.

Most shibas are escape artists and many can, and will, climb chain link fences.

All that being said, they can also be wonderful companions who are habit forming!

NOTE: Due to the breed's very independent nature, we advise that all shibas be leashed whenever outside a securely fenced area.  Extreme caution should be taken around open doors with any shiba. New owners will need to take special care to ensure their new dog is safely contained.  In addition, electric fences are strongly discouraged.  They are not effective at containing shibas (largely due to their extremely high prey drive) and will serve to discourage the shiba from returning home.
